007 – RoadWorks

RoadWorks was part of a Ideas competition set by London Festival Of Architecture to design new creative workspace and improved connections beneath and around the Silvertown flyover, in the Royal Docks area of Newham, east London. Unlike traditional, introverted studio and office spaces, the proposal is to make a workspace development that has a civic sensibility and can become a community hub. The mix of uses proposed will inject a vibrancy into the area, creating a destination for businesses and visitors alike. The varied uses ensure round the clock use - providing not only for the 9-5 tenants but also setting up the conditions for an evening and weekend economy to flourish, with food and beverage and retail uses mixed in with workspace units. A variety of workspaces of different types and sizes (co-working spaces, individual units, communal studios, communal facilities) is proposed to attract a mix of tenants. Each occupant needs good neighbours who are open to collaborate, share resources and offer mutual opportunities - helping each individual grow and thrive in the community.
