Conversations on new housing in existing communities should begin with an approach to preservation - understanding the value of what exists, and using design to amplify its potential. The proposal is a model of regeneration of the ubiquitous Liverpool terrace, working closely with existing building fabric to carefully retrofit for contemporary use, while reassessing the typology’s orientation to transform anti-social, back-alley bin store space into a shared productive landscape for an emerging community. Existing buildings on the site are to be retrofitted to improve comfort and efficiency through the insertion of large timber joinery elements. Private amenity is provided through low walls and permeable fences in the shared back yard, and roof terraces carved out of the existing roofline. The end terrace, visibly the odd-one-out on the street, will become a shared room for events, meetings and birthday parties. Looking forward, the revived community can use their agency to create a pop-up green space on a neighbouring vacant plot or even consider the future of the derelict corner block at the end of the street.
